Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
If I am a parent, at what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
Around age 7 is the ideal time for a first check-up. Most children won’t need treatment that early, but an early visit lets us monitor how the teeth and jaws are developing and step in at the right moment if needed.
I’m 60 years old; does that mean I am too old for braces or aligners?
Not at all. Teeth can be moved at any age, and a growing number of our patients are adults. Clear aligners, in particular, are popular with adults because they’re discreet and fit easily around work and social life. The age range of our current patients is from 7 to 75!
Do I need a referral from my dentist to book?
No, you’re welcome to book a consultation with us directly.
What happens at the first consultation?
We examine your teeth, take a digital 3D scan and photos, and talk through your options, likely timeline, and cost. Because we plan treatment digitally, we can often show you a preview of your expected result before you commit to anything.
Treatments & Technology
Should I choose braces or clear aligners?
Both straighten teeth effectively; the right choice depends on your specific case, lifestyle, and preferences. Aligners are removable, nearly invisible and are increasingly able to address more complex cases; braces are fixed and can work better for certain types of corrections. We’ll recommend the best fit after assessing your teeth and goals.
Are clear aligners suitable for teenagers?
Often, yes. Many teens are good candidates, provided they’re committed to wearing the aligners the recommended 22 hours a day. We’ll assess whether they’re the right fit at the initial consultation.
Can my child be treated with clear aligners?
Absolutely! In fact, more and more children are being successfully treated with clear aligners nowadays. Aligner systems have especially tailored solutions for children which we have extensive experience in providing.
What does “Angel Aligner Gold Provider” mean?
Angel Aligner is one of the leading clear aligner systems in the world. The Gold Provider status, which we have, recognizes orthodontists with a proven track record in consistently delivering successful treatment with the system, so you’re definitely in experienced hands.
Are clear aligners really as effective as braces?
For many cases, yes, provided they’re worn as directed, which is usually 22 hours a day. Consistency is what makes them work. Some types of cases are still better treated with braces, and we’ll always be honest with you about which option will give the best result for your case.
What is digital treatment planning?
Instead of guesswork, we map out your entire treatment on a computer using a 3D model of your teeth. This lets us plan each stage precisely and show you the projected outcome from the very start.
How do clear aligners work?
You wear a series of custom-made, transparent trays, each one shaped slightly differently. Every set gently guides your teeth a little closer to their final position, and you move to the next set every week or two until treatment is complete. The whole sequence is mapped out digitally from the start.
Will people be able to tell I’m wearing aligners?
Rarely. The trays are clear and fit snugly over your teeth, so most people won’t notice them in everyday conversation, which is exactly why so many adults and older teens choose them.
Can I eat and drink normally with clear aligners?
Yes, because you take them out to eat. That means no food restrictions at all. The one rule: remove them for anything other than water (especially coffee, tea, and colored or sugary drinks) so they stay clear and hygienic, then pop them back in afterward.
How do I look after my aligners?
They’re easy to care for: rinse them, brush them gently, and keep them in their case when they’re out. We’ll walk you through the simple daily routine at your fitting appointment.
Will aligners affect my speech?
You might notice a slight lisp for a day or two as your tongue adjusts, but it passes quickly and most people are speaking normally almost right away.
What if I lose or break an aligner?
It happens, don’t worry about it. Contact us and we’ll advise you on the next step, usually moving to your next set or replacing the tray. Because your treatment is planned digitally, we already have your full sequence on record.
Special Cases
My child is a mouth breather; can you help?
Possibly, yes, and so it’s worth having it assessed. Persistent mouth breathing in children can be linked to the way the jaws and teeth develop, and it sometimes goes hand in hand with a narrow upper jaw or crowded teeth. At a consultation we’ll examine how your child’s jaws are growing and look for any orthodontic factors we can help with, such as gently widening a narrow upper jaw. Because mouth breathing often has a nasal or airway cause too (like enlarged adenoids, tonsils, or allergies), we may also suggest seeing an ENT specialist so that the root cause is addressed alongside any orthodontic treatment.
I’m an adult and I snore at night; my dentist recommended I see an orthodontist. What treatments can help?
We can help in many cases. Orthodontists can provide a custom-made oral appliance that gently holds the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, helping to keep the airway open and reduce snoring. These devices are comfortable, discreet, and a popular alternative to bulkier options. One important note: snoring can sometimes be a sign of a medical condition called “obstructive sleep apnoea,” so we’ll always make sure it’s been properly evaluated before starting; that way any treatment we provide is both safe and effective. Book a consultation and we’ll talk through the right path for you.
Our paediatrician says my child’s jaw is underdeveloped, at what age would they benefit from treatment?
This is exactly the kind of case where timing matters, so it’s good you’re asking early. We recommend a first assessment around age 7, even if treatment isn’t needed straight away. Certain jaw-development issues respond best to treatment while a child is still actively growing, often somewhere between the ages of about 8 and 12, depending on the child and the specific concern. We can gently guide the jaw’s growth during that window. The best way to know is to have your child assessed: we’ll monitor their development and recommend the ideal time to begin, so nothing is started too early or missed too late.
I had braces years ago but my teeth have moved since. Can I have treatment again?
Absolutely! This is one of the most common reasons adults come to see us, and it’s very treatable. Teeth can gradually shift over the years, especially if a retainer wasn’t worn long-term. The movement is usually mild to moderate and often corrects quickly. Clear aligners are frequently an ideal solution here: discreet, comfortable, and well suited to this kind of “touch-up.” We’ll assess where your teeth are now and design a plan to get your smile back on track and, this time, we’ll make sure you have a clear plan for keeping the results.
Timeline, Comfort & Cost
How long does treatment take?
It varies with each case. Minor corrections can take just a few months, while comprehensive treatment typically runs 12–24 months. We’ll give you a personalized estimate at your initial consultation and will provide updates as we go along.
Does treatment hurt?
You may feel mild soreness or pressure for a few days after braces are fitted or when you switch to a new set of aligners; this is a sign that the teeth are moving. It settles quickly and is easily managed.
How much does treatment cost?
The cost depends on the type of treatment and how complex your case is, so we provide a clear, personalized quote after your consultation, no surprises. Generally, our prices are competitive. To make treatment more accessible, we also offer flexible payment plans, which we’re happy to discuss with you.
Living With Treatment
Are there foods I’ll need to avoid?
With braces, yes, hard and sticky foods can damage them. With clear aligners there are no food restrictions at all, since you simply remove them to eat.
Will I need to wear a retainer afterward?
Yes. Once your teeth are in their new position, a retainer keeps them there. Your orthodontist will recommend the most suitable type of retainer for your case. One option, fixed retainers, are placed discreetly behind your teeth and remain in place. For removable retainers, wearing them as advised is what protects your results for the long term.
